Ornamentation of Kazakh Textiles and Clothing: Iconographic Analysis and Cultural Representation

This article examines how ornamental motifs from Kazakh textile heritage, including qoshqar-muyiz (ram’s horn), tumar (amuletic triangle) and shanyrak (yurt crown), are translated into contemporary ready-to-wear (RTW) fashion in Kazakhstan and how these translations reconfigure cultural meaning in the post-independence period. Using a paired corpus of 12 museum-documented textiles (syrmak, tekemet, tus kiiz and baskur) and 16 RTW looks by five Kazakh labels (2016–2021), the study operationalizes Panofsky’s three-level iconological method in dialogue with fashion semiotics and critical heritage theory. Visual coding traces motifs across form, material, production process, color, scale and bodily placement, triangulated with catalog descriptions, brand statements and media framing. The analysis identifies recurrent translation strategies: material substitution from felt and appliqué to embroidery, digital print, laser-cut leather and jacquard; morphological reframing through simplification, scaling and reorientation on the body; chromatic recoding from high-contrast heritage palettes to contemporary neutrals and monochromes; and discursive recontextualisation through branding and runway narration. Ornament functions as a cultural signifier that mediates authenticity, mobility and identity while negotiating post-Soviet heritage revival, cultural memory and global fashion visibility. The article offers a replicable comparative procedure for analyzing heritage translation in dress and a non-Western case for thinking about aesthetic sovereignty at the craft-fashion interface.
