Researching Lx English among young children: Challenges and complexities

Most research on Lx English has focused on adolescent and adult learners, despite growing evidence that young children encounter and use English well before formal instruction begins. Studies specifically addressing the use of and exposure to Lx English among young children, ages 3–7 in Sweden and similar countries remain scarce. This paper addresses that gap by critically examining the methodological and ethical complexities involved in researching young children’s exposure to and use of English as an additional language in Swedish preschools. Given the critical importance of language development in early childhood, it is essential to investigate how children engage with and experience language through diverse modalities. This paper aims to critically discuss the challenges and complexities encountered in the research on young children’s exposure to English as an additional language (Lx) in Swedish preschools. In particular, the study investigates how different methodological approaches can capture the multifaceted, context-dependent, and often informal nature of Lx English in early childhood settings. The methodological framework includes observations, field notes, interviews with children and preschool teachers, questionnaires, and age-relevant language proficiency tests. The study is conducted across four distinct Swedish preschool contexts. Rather than presenting detailed empirical findings, this paper focuses on methodological and ethical reflections emerging from the study, highlighting the complexities and challenges inherent in conducting research with young children in such settings. The discussion addresses key issues that may prove significant for researchers engaged in preschool research, particularly how different methods can help amplify children's voices. The paper concludes with practical implications for researchers in the field of early childhood education and care, emphasizing the importance of adopting a child-centered perspective when children are the primary focus of research.

Most research on Lx English has focused on adolescent and adult learners, despite growing evidence that young children encounter and use English well before formal instruction begins.
