A-HEBS (AEROBRAKE) - Next-Generation Hybrid Braking Concept / 2026
Abstract Modern high-speed vehicles require braking systems capable of maintaining stable performance under extreme thermal and mechanical loads. Conventional hydraulic disc brake systems are highly effective; however, during repeated braking at speeds above 200 km/h, they are susceptible to excessive heat generation, brake fade, accelerated component wear, and reduced braking efficiency. These challenges highlight the need for innovative braking technologies that improve thermal management while maintaining consistent stopping performance. This conceptual engineering project introduces A-HEBS (AEROBRAKE — Powered by HEBS), a three-stage hybrid braking system designed to enhance braking efficiency and reduce thermal stress in high-speed vehicles. The proposed system combines electromagnetic braking, active air-cooling technology, and a hydraulic disc braking system, all coordinated through an intelligent electronic control unit (A-HEBS Control Unit). During high-speed braking, the electromagnetic module provides non-contact deceleration, reducing the amount of kinetic energy converted into heat by the brake discs. As vehicle speed decreases, an active air-cooling system increases airflow through specially designed ventilation channels to accelerate heat dissipation. Finally, at lower speeds where electromagnetic braking becomes less effective, the hydraulic disc brake delivers the primary stopping force required for complete vehicle deceleration. The proposed architecture aims to distribute braking loads across multiple technologies rather than relying solely on friction-based braking. This approach is expected to reduce brake disc temperatures, minimize brake fade, extend brake component lifespan, improve braking consistency, and enhance vehicle safety during high-speed operation. It should be noted that A-HEBS is presented as a conceptual engineering design. The expected performance improvements described in this study are theoretical and require validation through computational simulations, laboratory experiments, prototype development, and real-world vehicle testing. This project provides a foundation for future research into intelligent hybrid braking technologies and offers a potential direction for the development of next-generation braking systems for high-performance, electric, and autonomous vehicles.
