Hymexazol and Dexon Adsorption by Moss Peat Modified by Invasive Plant Extract

ABSTRACT In this study, moss peat (MP) was modified with different proportions of plant extract (E) to investigate the effect of E from different invasive plants on germicide adsorption in MP. The morphological features of E‐modified MP (E‐MP) were characterized using various analytical techniques. The batch method was employed to investigate the isothermal adsorption behavior of hymexazol and dexon on different E‐MPs. The thermodynamic and kinetic characteristics of hymexazol and dexon adsorption on different E‐MPs were evaluated through batch experiments, and the effects of temperature, pH, and ionic strength on the adsorption process were investigated. Modifications with E altered the physicochemical properties of MPs and introduced new functional groups onto their surfaces. The adsorption of hymexazol and dexon onto different E‐MPs were appropriately described by the Freundlich model, and the adsorption capacity followed the order: Alternanthera philoxeroides > Portulaca oleracea > Eupatorium adenophorum E‐MP. Lower pH and temperature were more favorable for the adsorption of hymexazol and dexon on different E‐MPs. As ionic strength increased, the adsorption amount of hymexazol decreased, while the adsorption amount of dexon first increased and then decreased. The adsorption process of hymexazol and dexon was a spontaneous, exothermic entropy‐increasing reaction.
