Prescribing guidance for symptom management in end-of-life care
End-of-life care plays an essential role in alleviating distress and improving the quality of life for patients nearing the end of their lives. Drawing on evidence-based frameworks, this article outlines prescribing guidance for managing distressing symptoms, such as pain, breathlessness, nausea and vomiting, agitation and respiratory secretions. Pharmacological interventions, including morphine, midazolam, haloperidol and glycopyrronium are discussed, alongside the importance of dose adjustments based on comorbidities and renal function. The author emphasises the value of multidisciplinary input, regular assessment and shared decision making to support empathetic patient-centred care.
