The Contradiction of Development

This paper explores the paradox of modern development: while technology, medicine, and economic progress expand human possibilities, they do not necessarily make life more meaningful or fulfilling. Drawing on Martha Nussbaum and other philosophers, it argues that a good life depends not on having endless options, but on turning freedom into meaningful commitments, relationships, responsibility, and purpose.

Abstract

This paper explores the paradox of modern development: while technology, medicine, and economic progress expand human possibilities, they do not necessarily make life more meaningful or fulfilling. Drawing on Martha Nussbaum and other philosophers, it argues that a good life depends not on having endless options, but on turning freedom into meaningful commitments, relationships, responsibility, and purpose.
