From Fried Chicken to Cultural Symbol

AlBaik, a prominent fast-food chain in Saudi Arabia, holds a unique position that transcends its commercial offerings. Despite recurrent online complaints regarding perceived declines in taste, quality, or service, the brand consistently receives robust public promotion and emotional defense from consumers. This paper examines this apparent contradiction by integrating insights from consumer psychology, behavioral economics, sociology, and brand studies, with a particular focus on the Saudi and Gulf market context. We argue that AlBaik's sustained popularity is not solely attributable to the current sensory attributes of its food, but rather to a dense network of psychological and cultural advantages. These include accumulated brand equity, profound nostalgia, strong social identity, perceived affordability, ritualized consumption, and the symbolic value of a locally rooted Saudi success story. Drawing upon the Three-Layer Model of Muslim Consumer Decision-Making and the concept of 'Asabiyyah , we propose that collective identity and cultural belonging significantly influence consumer behavior, often overriding purely rational economic considerations. Furthermore, we introduce the concept of cultural sacralization to explain how AlBaik has become protected from ordinary criticism, evolving into a cultural symbol deeply intertwined with memories, belonging, and collective identity. The paper also considers the role of e-marketing strategies in maintaining customer satisfaction and the impact of perceived owner wealth on competing restaurants. We conclude by proposing an empirical research design to test these hypotheses, contributing to a more nuanced understanding of brand relationships in culturally rich markets.
