From Past to Beyond: Nature in the Poetic Imagination of Wordsworth, Keats, and Coleridge
Abstract: This article explores how nature influenced British Romantic writers’ poetry, and considers Wordsworth’s, Coleridge’s, and Keats’s work as an example. Nature nourished their childhood memory, allowed them an emotional healing process, and the imaginative growth of the self. By examining key poetic passages, the study shows how early experiences in nature shape the poet’s inner life, offering a lasting source of comfort and renewal in adulthood. It further examines the Romantic claim that imagination enables the self to transcend its limits and enter into a more intimate relation with the natural world, thereby sustaining artistic creation. In light of recent ecocritical perspectives, these motifs continue to shape our contemporary understandings of nature’s restorative and creative capacities. The present article examines, through three poets, Wordsworth, Keats, and Coleridge, the evolving relationship between nature, memory, and imagination in three interconnected stages.: first, nature as the foundation of childhood memory and poetic imagination; second, nature as a restorative force that sustains the imaginative faculty; and finally, nature as a medium through which the self achieves transcendence. Key words: Nature, Imagination, memories, poetry, transcendence.
