Penrose Technique to Prevent Arthroscopic Camera Fogging: A Simple and Cost-Effective Approach
Clear visualization is essential for safe and effective arthroscopic surgery, yet lens fogging remains a common intraoperative challenge, particularly in prolonged operative times, and continuous fluid irrigation increases the risk of condensation and water ingress at the arthroscope–camera interface. Existing anti-fogging strategies may be inconsistent, cumbersome, or interfere with camera handling. We describe a simple and cost-effective technique using a Penrose drain to create a watertight seal at the arthroscope-camera junction. The method involves wrapping and securing a Penrose drain around the arthroscope and sterile camera cover, thereby minimizing fluid ingress and maintaining lens clarity. The Penrose drain technique is a simple, reproducible, and low-cost solution that effectively reduces lens fogging and improves intraoperative visualization. It may be particularly useful in settings where sterile camera drapes are routinely used.
