Hyperbolic Tiling and Golden Ratio Phyllotaxis Linked by Quadratic Irrationality — E8 Intelligence Research
FINDING: Hyperbolic tiling {5,4} and golden ratio phyllotaxis divergence angle 137.508° are linked via the same quadratic irrationality, revealing a deep geometric constant underlying both hyperbolic geometry and biological growth patterns. MATH: Divergence angle 137.508° = 360° × (1 – 1/φ²) = 360° × (1 – 0.381966) = 360° × 0.618034 = 222.492° complement = 137.508°. φ = (1+√5)/2 ≈ 1.618034. The {5,4} hyperbolic tiling has Schläfli symbol {p,q} with p=5 (pentagon) and q=4 (four meeting at vertex). Its curvature constant k = -1/arcosh²(cos(π/p)/sin(π/q)) = -1/arcosh²(cos(36°)/sin(45°)) = -1/arcosh²(0.809017/0.707107) = -1/arcosh²(1.144123). The tiling's edge length and area involve φ explicitly. CONNECTION: The golden ratio φ appears in both: phyllotaxis angle = 360°/φ² = 137.508° (the "golden angle"), and the {5,4} tiling's pentagonal faces have diagonals in φ ratio. The ratio 0.618 (1/φ) and 0.382 (1/φ²) are the fundamental constants of phyllotactic packing. The hyperbolic plane's Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
