Universities in Search of a New Direction Where Artificial Intelligence Meets the Disciplines

This paper examines how universities should respond to the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence across academic disciplines. Rather than focusing solely on the creation of new interdisciplinary degree programmes, it critically evaluates whether combining artificial intelligence with established fields such as history, philosophy, law, and the humanities can produce meaningful educational models or merely new programme titles. The paper analyses the opportunities and risks of interdisciplinary AI education, including curriculum design, disciplinary depth, academic staffing, graduate competencies, labour-market outcomes, and institutional capacity. It explores the potential contributions of artificial intelligence to historical research, philosophy, ethics, and the humanities while emphasising the continuing importance of critical thinking, source evaluation, disciplinary expertise, and human judgment. Finally, the paper discusses alternative models for integrating artificial intelligence into higher education, including horizontal curriculum integration, modular educational structures, and pilot interdisciplinary programmes. It argues that the long-term success of AI education will depend not on the proliferation of programme names, but on developing graduates who possess deep disciplinary knowledge, understand the capabilities and limitations of artificial intelligence, and can critically evaluate, verify, and responsibly apply AI-generated knowledge in research and professional practice.
