The TimeSpace Sustainability Method: A descriptive frame for touring in the performing arts

TimeSpace Sustainability is a descriptive (non-evaluative) method for understanding the sustainability of touring in the performing arts. Rather than measuring travel in isolation, it expresses a tour as ratios between what a journey consumes (time and distance) and the cultural activity it yields (concerts, rehearsals, master classes, workshops, recordings, talks, outreach). This concept-and-positioning note (Version 1.0) sets out the method, its deliberate refusal to grade or score, its relationship to carbon-accounting tools, and its origin in the REMA (European Early Music Network) transition workshops of 2024, where it was presented to the mobility working group on 9 April 2024. A technical specification will follow as a later version. Released under CC-BY 4.0 to encourage adoption.
