Integrative Thinking Produces Emotional Intelligence

This paper proposes a cognitive mechanism explaining how emotional intelligence is produced. While existing literature commonly treats emotional intelligence as a trait or ability, integrative thinking has primarily been discussed as a managerial or strategic capability. For the purposes of this paper, an alternative conceptualization of Integrative Thinking is introduced as a cognitive mechanism in which the mind holds multiple interpretations of a situation at the same time without collapsing into extremes, expands those interpretations into their full range of possibilities, and brings them together into one unified understanding before responding. Within this conceptualization, the paper proposes a three-layer cognitive framework describing the psychological sequence underlying behaviour: How You Think → How You Feel → How You Act. Within this framework, the paper proposes the causal mechanism that integrative thinking produces emotional intelligence, which in turn produces intelligent behaviour, forming the sequence: Integrative Thinking → Emotional Intelligence → Intelligent Behaviour. To illustrate the proposed mechanism, the paper analyzes Krishna's guidance across the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita as an interpretive case study, demonstrating how broader interpretation leads to emotional stability which in turn guides intelligent behaviour within the proposed framework. This paper contributes a theoretical model linking cognition, emotion, and behaviour, and reframes emotional intelligence as a cognitive output emerging from integrative thinking rather than solely as a personality trait or ability.
