Mindful Little Minds: Reducing Posttraumatic Symptoms and Supporting Preschoolers Facing Chronic Stress

Abstract Objectives This study examined the impact of a mindfulness-based intervention on preschoolers chronically exposed to cross-border missile attacks and violence. Prolonged exposure to such hostilities has been linked to elevated levels of anxiety and behavioral difficulties in a substantial proportion of affected children. The primary objective was to reduce posttraumatic stress disorder symptoms and improve emotional and behavioral functioning through a developmentally tailored mindfulness program. Method A total of 150 children aged 3–6 from preschools located near the Gaza border participated in the study. The children were divided into two groups: the experimental group ( n = 94) and the control group ( n = 56). The Focused and Mindful program was implemented over 12 weeks and consisted of brief, structured mindfulness practices integrated into daily routines. A pre–post design was used to assess changes in children’s functioning using standardized teacher and parent questionnaires assessing emotional, social, behavioral difficulties, and resilience. Results Significant group × time interactions indicated increased internalizing and externalizing behavior problems in the control group, whereas the experimental group maintained stable levels across these domains and demonstrated improvements in prosocial behaviors, consistent across age and gender. Conclusions Findings suggest that implementing mindfulness-based programs in early childhood settings in high-stress environments is feasible. The intervention may have supported preschoolers’ resilience and emotional well-being in the context of ongoing exposure to conflict and trauma. These findings support the integration of mindfulness interventions into educational and psychosocial frameworks in areas affected by chronic stress and insecurity.
