Beyond Fidelity: Health‐Psychological Mechanisms Linking Safewards to Relational Safety
We read with great interest Mullen et al.'s qualitative exploration of mental health nurses' responses to consumers' experiences of Safewards in acute inpatient mental health units. The study demonstrates that nurses generally valued respectful communication and consumer involvement, yet workload, task-oriented routines and inconsistent acceptance of Safewards constrained its application (Mullen et al. 2026).We aim to extend this discussion by proposing a health-psychological account of how these implementation challenges may influence both consumer distress and nursing behaviour.
