Multifunctional polyvinylidene fluoride with dimethylformamide polymer composites for enhanced solar desalination performance

The world is in dreadful need of new technology to solve the severe freshwater shortage that humans are currently facing. For desalinating salty water, the solar still has proven to be a useful and reasonably priced technique. This study aims to enhance the solar still’s performance and, consequently, the amount of distillate produced per hour by combining Polyvinylidene Fluoride and Dimethyl formamide onto the absorbent layer. For the produced materials, composition properties including Electrical (dielectric constant), mechanical (surface tension), physical (viscosity), chemical (solubility), and morphological (FT-IR, SEM, and UV-visible) were described. Dimethylformamide was mixed with varying weight percentages of Polyvinylidene Fluoride to examine its distinct characteristics. Because there is less space between the particles, heat transmission is extroverted, according to results from thermal gravimetry analysis (TGA). The thermal conductivity and dielectric strength for sample C (10% PVDF in DMF) were found to be 0.135 W/m.K and 36.3, respectively, demonstrating the significance of blending PVDF with DME.
