A bibliometric and thematic analysis of knowledge hiding research: Current status and future research directions

Background Knowledge hiding (KH) is a counterproductive knowledge behavior that obstructs effective knowledge management within organizations. Prior reviews have charted the KH discipline;however, a notable gap exists in understanding its dimensions, underlying reasons, psychological mechanisms, and mitigation strategies. Therefore, the present study attempts to uncover emotional pathways that lead to KH and its behavioral effects. Objective This study seeks to integrate findings from the KH literature using a Bibliometric Systematic Literature Review (B-SLR) approach. Methods It performs a bibliometric evaluation of 642 articles and a thematic analysis of 121 selected articles published from 1999 to 2025. It charts the evolution of KH literature and identifies eight themes: counterproductive knowledge behaviors, predictors, intervention mechanisms, theories, consequences, dimensions, negative behaviors, and KH in teams. These themes are integrated into a conceptual framework that outlines their relationships and influence on KH behavior. The study also identifies the positive and negative emotional processes that drive KH and discusses its implications, serving as a foundational reference for future investigations. Conclusions The review offers insights for practitioners and organizations to recognize KH, evaluate its risks and benefits, and make informed decisions. By identifying and addressing its unfavorable antecedents, adverse effects on employees and organizations may be limited. Implementing favorable and transparent policies, recognizing Knowledge-Sharing efforts, and ensuring fairness in rewards and career progression may inhibit KH in the workplace.
