The Body as Structural Condition: How Environment Reaches Understanding
This paper proposes that bodily registration functions as the structural condition through which environmental friction (F_field) becomes available to individual friction (F_individual) — a transition assumed but not previously specified in the Maura Theory series. Environment is widely treated, including in earlier papers of this series, as a factor that influences interpretation and understanding through structural friction (F). This paper proposes that the condition through which environmental friction reaches the individual's process of understanding is bodily registration: not a passive medium through which experience passes unchanged, but a necessary site at which environmental conditions become experientially available to the individual at all. The hypothesis is developed from long-term structural observation, primarily from private salon practice conducted over approximately twenty years, in which clients arriving in states of physical discomfort were repeatedly observed to revise their account of a situation after achieving physical comfort, without any change in the external facts of that situation. The paper introduces Somatic Permeability, a graded structural concept describing the degree to which bodily conditions allow environmental experience to remain available for perception and Observation. Consistent with the series' existing stance, the paper is descriptive rather than prescriptive, avoids claims exceeding the observations reported, and stops at Understanding — leaving the transition to Choice to a subsequent paper. Part of the Maura Theory series. Extends the Observation–Discovery framework developed in From Information Access to Meaning Recognition (10.5281/zenodo.21230076), The Conditions of Understanding (10.5281/zenodo.21251927), Mirror Protocol (10.5281/zenodo.21252084), and Understanding Infrastructure (10.5281/zenodo.21252316) by specifying the condition through which F_field first becomes available to F_individual.
