Remote Places, Convivial Spaces: The Social Place-Making Practices of Outside Broadcasts
Despite significant advancements in technology, the importance of locality and localness of experience remains. While the outside broadcast resonates with the performance of locality, its social place-making practices are underexplored. This article details the social place-making practices connected to outside broadcasts in relation to radio’s convivial role. A case study of a South African community radio station is presented, drawing on semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and a visual analysis of social media content. The findings suggest an interplay of materials, creativity, meaning, and conviviality in co-creating place, and argue that radio scholarship should recognize outside broadcasts as essential place-making tools.
