Utilization and efficiency of the polymeric materials for chiral resolution: an overview
Polysaccharides such as cellulose, amylose, and others are natural polymers that have been extensively studied as chiral stationary phases in high-performance liquid chromatography. Preferred-handed helix-induced synthetic polymers have also been exploited as chiral stationary phases. In addition to that, they have been utilized as chiral resolving agents in the enantioselective crystallization method. Polymer-based enantioselective membranes add diversity to the approaches which are an emerging class of materials that can offer chiral resolution. This review provides a brief introduction to various chiral resolution. This follows a detailed discussion about enantioselective membranes, enantioselective crystallization, and chromatographic enantio-separation that includes synthesis of polymeric materials, separation mechanism, and separation of various racemic compounds. In the end, the challenges and future perspectives involving these methods are recapped.
