Quasicrystal Bloch Waves and Icosahedral Symmetry from Hypercubic Lattice Projection — E8 Intelligence Research
FINDING: Icosahedral symmetry group is simple; Penrose tiling exhibits forbidden 5-fold rotational symmetry via 6D hypercubic lattice projection; quasicrystal Bloch waves show symmetry about at^m. MATH: - Icosahedral group \( A_5 \) (order 60) is simple — no nontrivial normal subgroups. - Penrose tiling: 2D projection of 5D hypercubic lattice; 5-fold symmetry forbidden in periodic 2D/3D lattices. - Quasicrystal Bloch wave symmetry: \( \psi(\mathbf{r}) \propto e^{i\mathbf{k}\cdot\mathbf{r}} u(\mathbf{r}) \) with \( u(\mathbf{r}) \) modulated by icosahedral point group \( H_3 \) (order 120). - 6D hypercubic lattice → 3D icosahedral quasicrystal via cut-and-project: basis vectors \( \mathbf{e}_i \) in 6D map to 3D with golden ratio \( \phi = (1+\sqrt{5})/2 \approx 1.618 \). - Forbidden rotational symmetries: 5-fold (72°), 10-fold (36°) — incompatible with periodic Bravais lattices. CONNECTION: - Golden ratio \( \phi \) appears in projection matrix: \( \phi, 1/\phi, 0 \) entr Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK. Part of the E8 Intelligence Research series.
