Exclusivity as Achievement: Relocating Mutual Exclusion to the Interior, and the Logical Primitive That Falls Out

Classical metaphysics treats the mutual exclusivity of alternatives as primitive: or, in its physical reading, excludes by nature. This paper argues the polarity should be reversed. Exclusivity is an achievement — stated, interior, structural content of the alternatives them-selves — rather than an intrinsic feature of disjunction; and once exclusion is relocated from the exterior of or to interior content, a new composition regime falls out with no further postulation: the joint regime, in which co-present alternatives simply decline to carry mu-tual negations. The difference between the regimes is fixed by a one-statement test, which answers the suspicion of mere notation; a strict fence separates what the new primitive sup-plies (openness) from anything its occupants might do with it (use), which blocks the two natural misreadings; and the primitive itself receives a deflationary definition: or-jointness is the logic-valued regime of not stating mutual negations on the interior side — obtained by declension, not addition. We argue the proposal reclassifies the color-exclusion problem that fractured the Tractatus, and supplies the determinable-based literature on metaphysical indeterminacy with the composition story it has lacked. A documented fact about the direction of discovery then bears on the proposal’s status: the two composition forms were first extracted, in companion work, from the case-by-case structure of interference phenomena — before the present philosophy existed — so the dichotomy’s shape is explained by what it was extracted from, not by any philosophical purpose it might serve. Whether the world instantiates the joint regime is the companion framework’s proposal, on which no thesis here leans; what the provenance establishes is that the primitive was not gerrymandered for the argument that now exposes it.
