Beyond choice: organic food packaging in French solidarity food initiatives

This article examines the visual and material dimensions of food packaging in the PANIERS project – a French solidarity food initiative providing subsidized organic produce to 1,200 low-income families through partnerships with 27 organic farms. While extensive scholarship analyses how commercial organic brands use packaging to justify premium pricing and create social distinction, research on food banks and emergency food provision rarely examines the material containers and visual presentation of food itself. Through field-based semiotic analysis, this study investigates how PANIERS packaging – kraft paper bags, wooden crates, and information sheets – functions when removed from market competition. The findings reveal packaging operating beyond its conventional commercial function: it mediates relationships between farmers and recipients, communicates product qualities without market differentiation and circulates knowledge about agriculture and cooking. However, the minimalist aesthetic emerging from resource constraints aligns with visual codes that educated middle-class coordinators valorize as ethical consumption, but may communicate scarcity rather than choice to recipients experiencing material deprivation. This research advances Visual Communication scholarship by demonstrating how identical visual codes carry different meanings across organizational and economic contexts.
