Educational Multisim ‐ LabVIEW Co ‐ Simulation of the Theory of Images in Groundwater Engineering

ABSTRACT This study employs a co‐simulation module combining Multisim and LabVIEW as an educational tool in the classroom to teach the method of images in groundwater engineering. It evaluates students' use of digital technology through quantitative data, supported by qualitative analysis. The Multisim module creates RC networks to simulate virtual one‐ and two‐sided bounded aquifers, featuring recharge, barrier, and mixed boundary types. LabVIEW acts as a data acquisition system, visualizing and analyzing simulation results. Data transfer occurs via hierarchical connectors. Inspired by image theory, the physical boundaries are replaced with imaginary wells to mimic the flow effects of actual boundaries. A key achievement is the RC analogs' ability to demonstrate and verify the hydraulic principles of image theory in a virtual confined aquifer with various boundary configurations. The strong agreement between the RC analogs' results and analytical solutions verifies their accuracy. This approach is novel in classrooms, as previous studies have not used digital technology to validate analytical solutions in image‐theory hydraulics.
