Icosahedron-Dodecahedron Dual Encodes Golden Ratio in Quasicrystals — E8 Intelligence Research
FINDING: Icosahedron-dodecahedron dual pair encodes golden ratio and 5-fold symmetry, which is forbidden in periodic crystals but appears in quasicrystals via the rhombic hexecontahedron as a 3D projection of a 6D hypercubic lattice. MATH: - Dual polyhedra: Icosahedron (20 faces, 12 vertices) ↔ Dodecahedron (12 faces, 20 vertices). - Golden ratio φ = (1+√5)/2 ≈ 1.618 appears in edge ratios and vertex coordinates of both. - Rhombic hexecontahedron: 60 faces, 60 vertices, 120 edges; each face is a golden rhombus with diagonals in ratio φ:1. - 5-fold symmetry axes: 6 axes in icosahedron, 10 in dodecahedron. - Quasicrystal projection: 3D slice of 6D hypercubic lattice (root system D6) yields 5-fold rotational order without periodicity. CONNECTION: - Golden ratio φ and its inverse 1/φ ≈ 0.618 appear in face diagonals and vertex coordinates. - Rhombic hexecontahedron's face angles: arctan(φ) ≈ 58.28° and arctan(1/φ) ≈ 31.72°, sum 90°. - 5-fold symmetry is crystallographical Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
