The Asexual Body: Phenomenology, Normativity, and the Ontological Decentralization of the Sexual in Contemporary Experience

Late modernity has positioned sexuality at the center of human subjectivity, to the extent that it frequently functions as an implicit ontological assumption underlying both the body and identity. Within this framework, asexual experience is often interpreted through deficit-based categories such as absence, lack, repression, or dysfunction. This article proposes a philosophical reconsideration of this premise through an articulation of the phenomenology of the body, Foucauldian genealogy, performative theory, and contemporary asexuality studies. In contrast to the notion of the “sexual body” as a universal and necessary reality, this work proposes the concept of the “asexual body,” not as a biological negation of sexuality, but as a critique of its ontological centrality. The human body possesses no intrinsic sexual meaning; rather, its significance emerges historically through cultural and normative dispositifs that organize experience, desire, and social intelligibility. From this perspective, sexuality appears as a contingent mode of experiential actualization rather than as the universal foundation of embodiment. Asexual experience thus reveals the possibility of inhabiting the body and human relationships beyond the dominant imperative of sexuality, challenging the identification of humanity with desire and erotic orientation. Beyond an identity-based claim, this study offers a philosophical reflection on the plurality of embodied forms of experience, the historical contingency of sexuality, and the opening of post-sexual horizons in which the body is no longer structurally subordinated to the logic of normative sexual desire.
