Return to school after concussion: perceptions of school administrators
Mild traumatic brain injury or concussion is one of the most common injuries sustained by children and adolescents in the United States. A survey of 623 principals across 25 states assessed their perceptions on concussion prevalence and school responses. Principals generally underestimated concussion rates and lacked formal concussion management teams, though most emphasized the importance of staff awareness and believed they offered effective accommodations. Findings revealed significant gaps in concussion management, suggesting many students may not receive adequate support, potentially leading to negative outcomes in recovery and academic progress.
