A curriculum description and evaluation of an interprofessional oral presentation workshop for students in medical doctor, physician associate, and nurse practitioner programs

Interprofessional education (IPE) is a mandatory part of curricula in most medical professional schools. Oral presentation skills are critical for interprofessional healthcare students, supporting effective communication and patient care. This flipped classroom workshop was designed to improve oral presentation skills of first year medical (MD), nurse practitioner (NP), and physician associate (PA) students through an IPE experience. The workshop employed a flipped classroom model, including prework (recorded didactics, video resources, and presentation rubrics) followed by small group sessions with interprofessional student dyads, facilitated by interprofessional faculty. Sessions were held in person for two years and virtually for four years. Students presented cases, received peer and faculty feedback, and engaged in reflective practices. Student evaluations of the session were collected via Qualtrics ® over six years, and a qualitative data analysis was performed to identify key themes and subthemes. These included: increased engagement through small group formats, the value of immediate and formative feedback, the supportive learning environment, structure of the session (resources, flipped classroom model, session delivery, facilitators) and value of practice [of patient presentation]. The students reported that the combination of small groups, real-time feedback, and structured resources enhanced the educational experience and allowed interprofessional interaction. Implementing similar approaches may enhance skill development, peer interaction, and stress reduction while fostering interprofessional collaboration in healthcare education.
