The Nanometer Frontier: Architectural Innovations in AI- Powered Desktop and Mobile Chips

The integration of artificial intelligence capabilities into desktop and mobile computer architecturerepresents a paradigm shift in personal computing, driven by fundamental innovations at the nanometerscale. This paper examines the architectural transformations enabling AI-powered chips from ananometer perspective, analyzing how process node advancements—from 4nm to 2nm and beyond—and novel design paradigms are reshaping both desktop and mobile processor landscapes. Through casestudies including NVIDIA's RTX Spark, Samsung's Exynos 2600, Apple's A20 Pro, and Google'sTensor G5, this paper explores how heterogeneous integration, unified memory architectures,processing-in-memory technologies, and advanced packaging are converging to enable local executionof large language models. The analysis reveals that the transition from cloud-dependent AI to on-deviceintelligence is being enabled by four critical nanometer-scale innovations: Gate-All-Around transistorarchitectures, backside power delivery networks, monolithic 3D stacking, and processing-in-memoryarchitectures. These developments collectively represent the most significant architecturaltransformation in personal computing since the introduction of the graphical user interface.Furthermore, this paper introduces the concept of “functional density” as a metric for evaluating AIchip capability and proposes a framework for assessing the societal implications of localized AIprocessing.
