Chile-China Trade Relations: A Return to Economic Dependence?

Since the early 2000s, China has become one of Latin America’s main trading partners and investors, which raises questions about the real economic benefits of its growing presence. This paper offers a detailed analysis of the Chile-China trade relationship and examines the evolution of the Chilean export basket in terms of product and market diversification while considering the impact of growing Chinese demand on Chile. We address the institutional deepening of Sino-Chilean relations alongside an official Chilean discourse that posits the need to diversify and increase export value in order to overcome the country’s traditional specialization in raw materials.

Abstract

Since the early 2000s, China has become one of Latin America’s main trading partners and investors, which raises questions about the real economic benefits of its growing presence. This paper offers a detailed analysis of the Chile-China trade relationship and examines the evolution of the Chilean export basket in terms of product and market diversification while considering the impact of growing Chinese demand on Chile. We address the institutional deepening of Sino-Chilean relations alongside an official Chilean discourse that posits the need to diversify and increase export value in order to overcome the country’s traditional specialization in raw materials.
