Retention of mechanical, dimensional, and color properties of stretch denim using elastane protectants during washing
Stretchable denim fabrics are widely used, owing to their comfort and body fitting, but conventional stone washing and repeated laundering compromise their mechanical, dimensional, and color properties, mainly through damage to elastane fibers. This study was an examination of the effect of two elastane protectors, Cerofin Stretch and Feran SSG 200, on the retention of tensile strength, seam strength, tear strength, shrinkage, and color fastness of denim woven from 94% cotton and 6% elastane, exposed to industrial stone washing and various numbers of home laundry wash cycles (0, 5, 15, 25). Results showed that stone washing and increased laundering had a significant negative effect on fabric strength and dimensional stability. The application of elastane protectants significantly reduces this degradation, maintains mechanical integrity, decreases shrinkage, and improves color retention. Scanning electron microscopy revealed decreased fiber fibrillation and surface degradation in elastane protected samples. Statistical analysis confirmed the significance of both stone washing and laundering cycles, with laundering having the greatest impact. The findings highlight the importance of elastane protectants for maintaining the performance and durability of stretch denim. This research is aligned with UN SDG Goal 9 as it fosters innovation in textile processing.
