Migration and Urban Growth in Haryana: An Analysis of Population Mobility Patterns

Migration is an important process that affects population distribution, economic development, and urban growth. Haryana has experienced major changes in its population structure due to industrial development, employment opportunities, and its connection with the National Capital Region (NCR). This study examines the patterns of migration and urban growth in Haryana by focusing on the major causes of migration, rural-urban migration trends, and the role of employment opportunities in population movement. The study is based on a quantitative descriptive approach using secondary data collected from the Census of India 2011 D-Series migration tables. Lee’s Push-Pull Theory of Migration (1966) and the Harris-Todaro Migration Model (1970) provide the theoretical foundation for understanding migration patterns in the state. The findings show that migration in Haryana is influenced by both social and economic factors. According to Census 2011 data, Haryana recorded 10.58 million migrants. Marriage was found to be the leading reason for migration, contributing 49.80 percent of total migration, especially among female migrants. Employment-related migration accounted for 12.60 percent and was mainly dominated by male migrants, indicating the importance of economic opportunities in migration decisions. The study also highlights that rural-origin migrants form a major part of migration flows, while states such as Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Bihar, and West Bengal are important sources of migrants coming to Haryana. Overall, the study concludes that migration has contributed significantly to Haryana’s urban growth, labor availability, and socio-economic transformation.
