Golden Ratio Links Diophantine Approximation to Pentagonal Billiard Dynamics — E8 Intelligence Research
FINDING: Diophantine approximation of quadratic irrationals is linked to boundedness in polygonal billiards with 5-fold symmetry via the golden ratio and its convergents, with Penrose tilings providing a crystallographic bridge. MATH: - Dirichlet's approximation theorem: \( |\alpha - a/q| \leq q^{-2} \) for infinitely many rationals \( a/q \). - For quadratic irrationals (e.g., golden ratio \( \phi = (1+\sqrt{5})/2 \approx 1.618 \)), the best approximations are given by convergents of the continued fraction, with error \( \sim 1/(\sqrt{5} q^2) \). - Badly approximable numbers (bounded partial quotients) include \( \phi \), with partial quotients all 1. - For billiards in polygons with 5-fold symmetry (angles \( 36^\circ, 72^\circ, 108^\circ \)), the unfolding method yields a translation surface whose Veech group is related to \( \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{5}) \). Boundedness of billiard trajectories corresponds to boundedness of the Diophantine approximation constant for the associated Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
