Engineering Empathy: MINDSET Medical Intelligence Network for Dynamic Support and Empathy Transformation: Integrating Psychological State into Closed-Loop Medical Intelligence
This paper proposes MINDSET (Medical Intelligence Network for Dynamic Support andEmpathy Transformation), a psycho-physiological closed-loop medical intelligence architecturethat integrates emotional, behavioral, and physiological signals into a unified control framework.By treating engagement as a first-class control objective, MINDSET reframes empathy from auser-interface feature into system logic. The architecture establishes a bidirectional feedbackloop in which psychological state influences therapeutic strategy, while physiological instabilitydynamically shapes system interaction, workload allocation, and escalation behavior. Unlike existing advisory or multi-signal systems that process physiological and behavioralinputs in parallel, MINDSET integrates psychological, behavioral, and physiological signalsinto a shared-control architecture. In this framework, psychological state is not treated as anauxiliary input but as a dynamic control variable that directly modulates therapeutic decisionmaking, system workload allocation, and escalation behavior.A central contribution is the conceptual introduction of Minimum Viable Diabetes (MVD),proposed as a state-transition-based fallback mode whose operational formalization and empiricalvalidation remain future work. MVD is designed to preserve metabolic safety during periodsof user burnout by reducing cognitive workload while maintaining essential clinical safeguards. The architecture is designed to incorporate multi-signal crisis detection, adaptive burden reduction, and safety-bounded autonomy, with the goal of enabling proactive intervention duringboth physiological and behavioral risk states, pending empirical validation.Safety in chronic disease systems is contingent on sustained human engagement; therefore, engagement must be treated as a primary control objective rather than an external behavioralconcern. By repositioning empathy as an architectural component of medical intelligence,MINDSET proposes a foundation for next-generation chronic disease platforms designed to optimizenot only physiological outcomes but also the durability of human-system participationover time.
