Deep eutectic solvents: a framework for research and applications
This study explores the application of the theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ) framework to analyse the patent landscape of Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES). This systematic review, conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, examines technological challenges in DES-related patents and identifies critical problems, trends, and innovative solutions that enhance DES applications in industrial processes. The key findings highlight the transformative potential of DES in pharmaceuticals, catalysis, and nanomaterial synthesis, particularly in reducing environmental impact through its biodegradability and energy efficiency properties. Using the TRIZ-Patent Literature Review (TRIZ-PLR) framework, this study identifies inventive solutions to synthesis challenges, application limitations, and environmental impact issues, proposing adaptive synthesis techniques, composite DES formulations, and segmented systems with purification cycles. These solutions underscore the adaptability of DES in areas such as metal extraction, catalysis, and pharmaceutical purification, providing a strategic path towards broader industrial adoption and optimization. The analysis of patent trends over the past two decades indicates an increasing interest in and investment in DES technologies, reinforcing their value in advancing sustainable industrial practices. This study provides a strategic pathway for broader industrial adoption and optimization of DES for sustainable industrial practices.
