Can a One-Photon State Be Made into an Observer? Relativistic Frames and Macroscopic Records

Can an individual photon itself function as an observer? We address this as a construction problem for a normalized one-photon Fock wavepacket on the Minkowski vacuum, isolated over a finite free interval I = [0, T] from external coupling and from prior or autonomously generated macroscopic records. The first attempted construction asks whether the state can intrinsically instantiate the Poincaré-equivariant timelike worldline, proper time, rest frame, and transported tetrad of a local special-relativistic observer: a criterion NSR that requires the candidate's own representation-theoretic and dynamical structure to supply the bundle canonically. Under a mode-level rest-frame requirement (every supporting momentum mode individually admits a rest frame), sharp-localization, Fokker-Pryce centroid, and Ehrenfest routes each fail to supply this bundle on the massless helicity-±1 representation. The second construction asks whether the photon can instead serve as a record-bearing detector: a criterion NAS, extracted from Anastopoulos and Savvidou's macroscopic-detector framework, that requires the candidate to contain or produce a persistent coarse-grained macroscopic record through an irreversible information-outputting process. The bare one-photon state contains no such structure, and free uncoupled evolution over I produces none. A normalizable massive scalar wavepacket provides a diagnostic control: Fleming's hyperplane-indexed covariant localization construction supplies the SR bundle while the same no-external-record, no-autonomous-record, and vanishing-coupling conditions preclude macroscopic record formation, establishing NSR ⇏ NAS. The result is bounded to the specified state, the two explicit constructions, and the free-interval history; it does not exclude interaction-relative or other observer roles for photons under different conditions.
