Dynamic Interfacial Protection Strategies for Stabilizing Zinc Anodes in Aqueous Zinc‐Ion Batteries

ABSTRACT Aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (AZIBs) have emerged as promising candidates for next‐generation grid‐scale energy storage, owing to their intrinsic safety, high theoretical capacity, low cost, and environmental benignity. However, their practical deployment is severely hindered by interfacial challenges at the zinc anode, including uncontrolled dendrite growth, parasitic hydrogen evolution, and byproduct formation. Constructing protective interfacial layers has been widely recognized as an effective strategy to enhance cycling stability and safety. Nevertheless, conventional static protection approaches suffer from performance degradation during prolonged cycling, arising from structural degradation, interfacial volume fluctuations, and dynamic electrolyte microenvironment. In contrast, dynamic interfacial protection strategies enable real‐time responsiveness to evolving physicochemical conditions at the electrode/electrolyte interface, facilitating adaptive regulation that suppresses side reactions and promotes uniform zinc deposition. In this review, we systematically summarize recent advances in dynamic interfacial protection categorizing them into three representative mechanisms: dynamic self‐healing, dynamic reconstruction, and dynamic microenvironment regulation. We further establish a conceptual framework for the design of high‐performance zinc anodes with adaptive interfaces and discuss the critical challenges and further prospects in this rapidly evolving field. This work is expected to provide valuable guidance for rational design of advanced interface engineering strategies toward durable AZIBs systems.
