Icosahedral Symmetry, the Golden Ratio, and E8 Root System Link — E8 Intelligence Research
FINDING: Icosahedral symmetry group (order 60) is the rotational symmetry group of the icosahedron, with 2-, 3-, and 5-fold axes, and is isomorphic to the alternating group A5. The golden ratio φ = (1+√5)/2 appears naturally in the coordinates of the icosahedron vertices. The E8 root system (240 vectors) contains an icosahedral subgroup, linking 5-fold symmetry to the largest exceptional Lie group. Quasicrystals with icosahedral symmetry can be constructed via a golden modification of the icosagrid, connected to the E8 lattice. MATH: - Golden ratio: φ = (1+√5)/2 ≈ 1.6180339887, φ⁻¹ = φ-1 ≈ 0.6180339887 - Icosahedron vertex coordinates: (0, ±1, ±φ), (±1, ±φ, 0), (±φ, 0, ±1) — 12 vertices, 20 faces, 30 edges - Rotational symmetry group order: 60 (A5, simple group) - 2-fold axes: 15 (through edge midpoints), 3-fold: 10 (through face centers), 5-fold: 6 (through vertices) - E8 root system: 240 roots in 8D, with Coxeter number 30, and contains the icosahedral group H3 as a subgro Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
