Dear god: mediating role of prayer between Filipino spirituality and psychological well-being
Filipinos cling to religion in dealing with challenging events. Religious coping is often expressed in prayer. Research on the influence of spirituality and prayer on mental health did not account for a culture-specific conceptualisation of spirituality. Research on prayer has been generalised as a private spiritual practice. The conceptualisation accounts for the role of Filipino Spirituality and different types of prayer in psychological well-being. The mediating role of prayer was also explored between FS and PWB (N = 751). Findings indicate a positive association of Filipino spirituality with prayer and psychological well-being. However, confession prayer (i.e., act of contrition) conveyed a negative link with psychological well-being. Thanksgiving positively predicts psychological well-being. In terms of mediation, only confession and thanksgiving mediate the association between Filipino spirituality and psychological wellbeing.
