Impact of Medical Emergency Team Implementation on In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Outcomes: A 3-Year Retrospective Study

Abstract Background: Sudden cardiac arrest is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in the non–intensive care unit areas of a hospital. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by trained providers in case of cardiac arrest has been proven to have survival benefits across the world. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine practice patterns and outcomes of CPR for in-hospital cardiac arrest after implementing the medical emergency team (MET) process. Materials and Methods: This is a prospective observational study of the patients who received CPR. All code blue calls for all age groups between March 2022 and 2025 were analyzed. Results: A total of 122 code blue events were recorded during the study. The highest incidence of code blue events (51%) was observed in patients aged above 60 years, with females (65%) outnumbering males (35%). About 90% of code blue occurrences were classified as cardiac arrests and 10% as respiratory arrests. The diagnosis of patients who underwent code blue events was either surgical (16%) or medical (84%). Results also show that 59% were nonsurvivors and 41% of patients were survivors, of whom 18 patients were sent home, and 32 patients were sent to the rehabilitation center. The highest number of code blue events was observed in the general/oncology department (35%), followed by the neurology wards (20%) and transplant or dialysis departments (17%). CPR durations varied from 1 to 18 min, with an average of 5.9 min. Conclusion: The implementation of the MET call has shown a positive effect on the number of code blue events reported per year.
