Modular Platform for the Integration of Bis Pyridine-Based Metal–Organic Cages in Polymer Systems

High Resolution Image Download MS PowerPoint Slide Inspired by the asymmetric cavities and cooperative functionalities found in natural systems such as enzymes and viruses, chemists have long sought synthetic architectures that create confined spaces with programmable shape, chemistry, and dynamics. Metal–organic cages (MOCs) represent an important synthetic platform that provide access to such discrete and tunable cavities. However, MOCs constructed from a single ligand type often lack structural asymmetry and cooperative functionality, while their isolated nature limits processability, recyclability, and practical deployment. Recent advances in the controlled formation of heteroleptic MOCs overcome these limitations by enabling multiple, chemically distinct ligands to coexist within a single cage, thereby introducing differentiated cavity environments with tunable size and combined functionalities. This Perspective discusses how these developments establish a modular platform in which ligand exchange can be used to plug new components and reprogram cage interiors, allowing control over guest binding, catalytic activity, and responsiveness to external stimuli without redesigning the entire assembly. Extending this modularity into polymeric systems further enhances practical relevance, as polymer integration enables processability, mechanical tunability, and efficient separation and recycling, while decoupling the synthetic complexity of cage assembly from that of the polymer network connectivity. By surveying recent advances and identifying key limitations, this Perspective highlights critical gaps and outlines promising opportunities for employing heteroleptic MOCs as a truly modular platform for developing functional polymer networks.
