ASSESSMENT OF MATERIAL WASTE ON BUILDING CONSTRUCTION SITES IN ENUGU URBAN, ENUGU STATE, NIGERIA

This study was carried out to assess the material wastage on building construction sites in Enugu urban, Enugu State. The aim of the study is to examine the material wastage on building construction sites in Enugu urban, Enugu State with the intention of coming up with strategies for intelligent methodologies for waste minimization. Mixed research design was used for the study which captured quantitative research and qualitative research design. Based on the guiding objectives of the study, the expected data which is needed in this work is qualitative and quantitative data. The data collected were analysed using frequency tables and percentages. The researcher narrowed the sample observation to professionals in the built environment in Enugu urban for feasibility reasons. The target population in this research from the six sites visited are 6 Architect, 9 builders, 12 Engineers, 6 quantity surveyors, 3 urban and regional planner. Population sample of 36 was used for the study. The instrument used for data collection was structured questionnaire and which was constructed by the researcher. The findings of the study reveals that demolition waste, Stockpile waste, cut off waste, transit waste, residual waste, application waste. More so, the study reveals that the impact of material wastage on itself is 1 which 100 percent whereas the impact of material wastage on the building delivery of the Nigerian construction industry is 0.161 which practically indicates that a unit increase in material wastage will lead to 16.1% decrease in the building delivery of the Nigerian construction industry on the average. The result further indicates that material wastage has negative relationship on the building delivery of the Nigerian construction industry such that an increase in material wastage will lead to decrease in the building delivery of the Nigeria construction industry on the average. The study recommends that site managers should monitor the activities in the site to avoid material wastage which could result to waste of resources and cost overrun
