Technology and the Destination Management Company: Connectivity, White-Label Distribution, and the Re-Sorting of Intermediary Functions

Information technology has reshaped tourism distribution more thoroughly than almost any other force, and the destination management company has often been cast as a likely casualty of that change. This paper takes a different view. It examines how connectivity, automated distribution, and white-label booking technology are re-sorting the functions of intermediaries rather than simply removing the middle of the chain, and it considers what this means for the ground operator. Drawing on the e-tourism literature and on the operational experience of distributing contracted inventory to trade partners, the paper describes the technologies that matter for a destination management company, connected reservation interfaces, automated business-to-business distribution, and white-label booking tools that let a partner sell an operator's product under its own brand, and it analyses how these tools change what the operator does. The paper argues that technology absorbs the transactional functions of distribution while raising the relative value of the functions that remain local and human: contracting, assembly, local knowledge, and delivery. It contends that the operators who fare best treat technology as a channel for their own product rather than as a threat to be resisted, and it closes with recommendations for operators, destination bodies, and researchers.
