A₄ Root System Projects 5D Hypercubic Lattice into Penrose Tilings — E8 Intelligence Research
FINDING: Aperiodic Penrose tilings are a 2D projection of a 5D hypercubic lattice, using the root system A₄ to enforce 5-fold rotational symmetry. MATH: - 5D hypercubic lattice ℤ⁵ → 2D projection plane defined by the A₄ root system. - Projection basis vectors correspond to the 5 vertices of a regular pentagon in 2D: \( \mathbf{v}_k = (\cos(2\pi k/5), \sin(2\pi k/5)) \) for \( k = 0,1,2,3,4 \). - The A₄ root system has 20 roots, with Coxeter number 5, and its Cartan matrix determinant = 5. - The projection selects points within a "strip" (Katok–Sinai–Vershik method) to yield aperiodic order. CONNECTION: - Golden ratio φ = (1+√5)/2 ≈ 1.618 appears naturally: the ratio of long to short rhombus edges in Penrose tiling is φ. - Related ratios: 1/φ ≈ 0.618, φ² ≈ 2.618, and φ⁻² ≈ 0.382. - 5-fold symmetry is crystallographically forbidden in periodic 2D/3D lattices, but emerges from 5D projection, linking to icosahedral symmetry (H₃) in 3D quasicrystals. - Base-60 not dire Author: Andrew Stewart Caldin, Independent Researcher, UK.
