Schizophrenic polymer: Synthetic strategy, nanostructural inversion and versatile applications
Schizophrenic polymers, smart macromolecular materials possessing stimuli responsive blocks that undergo orthogonal, reversible hydrophilic-to-hydrophobic transitions. Driven by distinct environmental triggers, such as pH, temperature, light, CO2, or ionic strength—these macromolecules undergo a fascinating macroscopic inversion of their self-assembled nanostructures via either soluble unimer formation or precipitation (complex aggregation). This review article comprehensively delineates the advanced synthetic strategies employed to construct these well-defined architectures, highlighting controlled radical polymerization techniques such as Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer (RAFT) and Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP). Synergistic use of multiple techniques, combining spectroscopic, scattering, and microscopic analyses, are required to fully understand the nanostructural flip-flop in aqueous media. Crucially, we account the sophisticated toolbox of inclusive characterization techniques essential for monitoring the dynamic core-corona inversion in situ. Finally, we highlight how this unique, on-demand compartmentalization drives versatile applications across smart drug delivery systems for cargo release, switchable micellar catalysis, and biomimetic smart surfaces. Ultimately, this work provides a critical roadmap for the rational design of the next generation of adaptive, multi-stimuli-responsive schizophrenic architecture.
