Numerical assessment of torsional response reduction in multi-story building model using compact gyroscopic stabilizers

This study presents a numerical assessment of compact gyroscopic stabilizers for reducing torsional vibrations in asymmetric multi-story buildings. A shear–torsion model with three degrees of freedom per floor was implemented in GNU Octave, incorporating velocity-dependent gyroscopic torques. Parametric analyses examined the effects of mass ratio, spin speed, and vertical placement. Results show that properly tuned stabilizers can reduce peak torsional displacement by up to 30%, with performance strongly dependent on structural mode characteristics. In the studied configuration, mid-height placement provided the highest reduction, while roof-level installation yielded more consistent but smaller improvements. Increasing mass ratio and spin speed enhances control, though with diminishing returns. The findings demonstrate the potential of compact gyroscopic devices as practical torsional control solutions, while highlighting the need for careful tuning and further validation for real structures.
