Circular Economy in Food Supply Chains: Comprehending the Paradigm and Redefining Future Research Through a Multidisciplinary Review of Reviews
ABSTRACT The inefficiencies of the global food system necessitate a shift towards a circular economy (CE) in food supply chains (FSCs). While research on CE in FSCs spans multiple disciplines, it often remains siloed within respective disciplinary boundaries, limiting its practical impact. To address this, the present multidisciplinary review of reviews analyses 116 carefully located and rigorously filtered review papers to explore interdisciplinary themes, implementation measures and future research directions to attain circularity in the FSCs. The review reveals four broad themes: supply chain stage‐specific process improvements and innovations; loss and waste management and rechannelisation approaches; integrated and systemic approaches; and the use of decision support and information systems that foster CE in FSCs. Additionally, identified research gaps call for stronger theoretical foundations, technical knowledge, innovative and integrated technological approaches and behavioural insights in future research. The article also discusses theoretical, managerial and methodical implications, offering pathways for impactful interdisciplinary research to advance CE in the global food systems.
