Chemistry of Sustainable Human Habitation on Titan: A Framework for Extraterrestrial Colonization

This preprint presents a chemistry-driven framework for sustainable human habitation on Titan, Saturn’s largest moon. Titan’s cryogenic environment, dominated by methane, nitrogen, and complex hydrocarbons, is reimagined as a resource base for energy, materials, and nutrients. Laboratory simulations demonstrate methane reforming via nickel-based catalysts, plasma-assisted nitrogen fixation to ammonia, and hydrocarbon polymerization into cryo-resistant structural materials. Together, these pathways outline a closed-loop ecosystem capable of supporting extraterrestrial colonization. By bridging molecular design with planetary engineering, this work positions chemistry as the foundation for extraterrestrial sustainability and envisions Titan as a frontier for permanent human settlement.
