Silence is golden: a cultural transformation of the tortoise and stork narrative from Candi Jago into Batik Motifs
Batik functions both as an aesthetic expression and a medium that embodies philosophical and symbolic meanings. The development of Malang batik has not fully incorporated local narratives, particularly the Tantri reliefs of Candi Jago. One notable fable, the Tortoise and Stork, conveys ethical values such as patience, self-control, obedience, and wisdom, yet remains underexplored. This study aims to transform Tantri relief of the Tortoise and Stork into batik motifs through a process of visual stylization. Employing a qualitative descriptive approach, the research integrates iconographic analysis to interpret the symbolic meanings of the relief, followed by visual exploration and design experimentation. Data were collected through literature review, artefact observation, and creative practice. The findings show the transformation process resulted in a principal motif featuring stylized representations of the tortoise and the stork, supported by secondary motifs inspired by water and cloud ornaments. These compositional elements do not only create visual harmony but also communicate philosophical messages related to ethical conduct and wisdom. The resulting batik motifs have the potential to become a new visual identity for Malangan batik and a medium for cultural education. This study shows that adapting temple reliefs into batik motifs supports both design innovation and cultural preservation.
