Theatre-in-education intervention and secondary students’ attitude to Yorùbá orature edutainment in a metropolitan Yorùbá society

This study determined the effect of Devised-for-Students and Devised-by-Students theatre-in-education (TiE) intervention packages on secondary students’ attitude to Yorùbá orature as means of edutainment in Ibadan metropolis. Moderating for the effect of motivation (high and low), a ten-week quasi-experiment, implemented in between pretest and post-test measures, was conducted. Participants (292 students aged 15.96 ± 1.47 years) from six purposively selected secondary schools in Ibadan metropolis were assigned to Devised-for-Students TiE Package (87), Devised-by-Students TiE Package (115) and control (90) groups. Based on the ANCOVA ( p < 0.05) conducted, treatment had significant main effect ( F (2, 285) = 402.88; p < 0.05; effect size = 74%), while the interaction effect of treatment and motivation was also significant ( F (2, 285) = 3.79; p < 0.05; effect size = 2.6%). The Devised-for-Students Package was found most effective, followed by the Devised-by-Students Package. Therefore, the study empirically established TiE as an attitudinal change methodology in the context of Yorùbá orature teaching and learning.
